The song Mary Did You Know is a modern Christmas classic that asks whether Mary realized who her baby was and what he would do.

Well, as one of my friends posted on facebook this week, Mary did know because “she knew her OT...and an angel visited her and told her” she was bearing the son of God that would sit on David’s throne. Mary’s own song, we know as the Magnificat, reflects that she clearly saw this incident in light of the larger history of Israel and God’s promises to them.

Others realized it too, like Elizabeth when she called Mary the mother of her Lord, and the Shepherds who, according to Luke 2, shared the message of the angels with Mary and Joseph.

Where the incarnation fits in Biblical history is the concern of the great Advent hymn O Come O Come Emmanuel, and the topic of a conversation I hosted with Chuck Colson and T. M. Moore on a special edition of BreakPoint this Week. Come to to hear the entire broadcast. That’s I’m John Stonestreet.
