Remember the Obama campaign commercial that compared voting for Obama with a girl losing her virginity? The commercial not only shared actress Lena Dunham with the new hit HBO show Girls, it shared the same dangerous view of sexuality. As my friend Michael Reneau wrote at the time for World magazine, the ad insinuated that unmarried women who choose not to have premarital sex are weirdoes and not fully women.
Unfortunately, this election season was full of messages that betrayed women, including “The Life of Julia,” which creepily pictured a fictitious woman completely dependent on federal government programs. So much for empowerment. We often hear that those who want to restrict abortion and not subsidize contraceptive coverage are waging war on women, but the real war is waged by those who reduce women to nothing more than their sex lives.
